I was one a many young people who went to camps in Michigan and Wisconsin in the 40's. The different camp groups generally met with our camp sponsors at the Terminal early in June and left on the James Whitcomb Riley (sp?) for Chicago where we changed to a local train to Wisconsin.

Because the camp I attended was at military winter school (St. Johns Military Academy), we wore uniforms, drilled, paraded and had courses in riflery, gun assembly, and the like (as well as the usual summer camp crafts, fishing, sailing, swimming, etc.). Usually we showed up to depart the station in uniform. Of course, there was a sister camp, Nagawicka, where the girls wore uniforms (much more attractive) and did all the same things.

My first memories of the Terminal began in this way and, since I enjoyed 8 weeks of summer camp so much, my memories of the Terminal come back every time I visit.
